Recreation and Tourist Attractions


University recreation centers on campus offer an Olympic-size pool, well-equipped exercise rooms, and racquetball, tennis, and volleyball courts (bring your own racquet and ball). Cards granting access may be purchased at the recreation centers for a small fee.

UCSD's spacious and scenic campus holds a wealth of possibilities for all tastes. Families will enjoy the Stephen Birch Aquarium-Museum at the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The Stuart Collection of outdoor sculpture is distributed across the campus. The libraries and bookstore are well stocked. The Geisel Library is an architectural landmark by William Pereira, and Louis I. Kahn's spectacularly sited Salk Institute is just west of campus.

Broad, sandy La Jolla Shores Beach is accessible by car, bus, or on foot (2 km). Torrey Pines State Park is approximately 1 km north of campus and offers many trails providing splendid views of the ocean and coast. West of the campus hang-gliders take off from the bluffs into the ocean breezes. The city of San Diego offers such popular attractions as the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park and museums, Sea World, the Old Globe Theater, a lively marina, historic ships, extensive shopping, and miles of shoreline. From 31 July to 18 August SummerFest La Jolla will present a series of chamber-music concerts featuring internationally renowned artists.

In San Diego's North County are Legoland, Quail Botanical Gardens, San Diego Wild Animal Park, and the esteemed Mount Palomar Observatory More distant are Disneyland, Universal Studios, the Getty Center, and other Los Angeles area destinations. An hour's drive southward or a bus and trolley trip can bring you to festive Tijuana with colorful shops, an impressive museum, and authentic Mexican cuisine.
