COMPUTER FACILITIES
A roomful of Macintosh computers will be available gratis to
all registrants. They are in Center Hall 315 (#980 on campus map,
south of Price Center). No login or password is required to run
basic software such as Internet Explorer, MacSSH, NiftyTelnet, Microsoft
Word, Excel, or similar applications. A dot-matrix printer in the
lab will be available, but not laser printers. For light to medium-duty
e-mail (not for mailboxes containing large quantities of mail) ACS-Webmail
is recommended. Just open the Internet Explorer browser, connect
to https://acs-webmail/longform.html
(from off campus https://acs-webmail.ucsd.edu/longform.html,
if you wish to test this before you arrive) and follow the instructions.
Remember to Logout. Eudora is also available for e-mail. To use
this you will need to create a personalized Settings file that specifies
your e-mail account username and your mail server. WARNING: Configure
the setting under Checking Mail to "Leave Mail on Server"!
It is convenient to bring a floppy disk so that you can keep your
Settings file between sessions. Technical advice will not be available.
WEATHER/ATTIRE
August weather in La Jolla is usually very pleasant, with high temperatures
around 25 °C and low humidity. Evenings can be cool, down to
17 °C, so a light jacket or sweater may be useful. The Pacific
Ocean nearby is warm enough for swimming, so bring swimwear, beach
towel, beach shoes/sandals, sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (San
Diego is at the same latitude as Marrakech). If you plan to travel
inland, be aware that daytime temperatures can reach 40 or 45 °C.
Dress during the sessions is informal. Dress for the banquet is
business or cocktail attire.
SMOKING
UCSD has been officially designated as a non-smoking environment.
Smoking is not permitted in any public buildings or in any campus
housing. Smoking is permitted on the grounds.
FOREIGN EXCHANGE AND BANKING
Only US currency will be accepted. Foreign currency can be exchanged
at the San Diego Airport
(M-F 6:00 AM - 8:30 PM; S-S 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM). You may also use
your automatic teller machine (ATM) card, MasterCard, or VISA card
to obtain cash (maximum usually $300/day) from the ATM machines
located near the Price Center. Dollar travelers' checks and major
credit cards are accepted for payment in nearly all hotels, restaurants,
shops, and markets.
